Kumbi makes a living using the macramé skills his mom taught him at age 5.
Like so many, Kumbi comes from a broken family and life was tough from an early age. But talking to this gentle, soft-spoken man with a beautiful smile you wouldn’t have any clue of the challenges he’s had to overcome in his 45 years. His mom is a schoolteacher, and she’s the one he owes his macramé talent to since grade 2! Sadly, and ironically, Kumbi had to drop out of school at end of grade 2 because of family problems. But his love for this popular craft is what he turned to at the tender age of 5. He fondly remembers the books and magazines his mom collected which helped inspire his love for macramé.
Kumbi has taught many people over the years the skill of tying knots to create gorgeous items, including prison inmates through a rehabilitation program.
On most days you’ll find Kumbi whiling away his time creating magnificent macramé products – particularly when he needs something to take his mind off life’s struggles.
Show Kumbi a photo of something that has been macraméd and ask if he can make it, and his response is ‘I can macrame anything!’
Kumbi is part of the Thusana Product Development team and is helping us create unique products using a mix of craft and raw materials. So although you may not see a lot of his talent on the website yet we can’t wait to see him using his macrame skills in Thusana range of products.
He is also a man of other creative talents, including sewing, baking, crocheting and singing, and hopes to own his own art shop selling accessories one day.
We believe in you Kumbi and would love to see your dream become a reality!
